# Module Assignment M05 — Vector Logo Build
## ARTTECHES Graphic Designing Mastery | Instructor: Ali Akbar Shah
**Weight:** Counts toward Module Assignments (25% of final grade)
**Module:** M05 — Logo and Vector Design (Days 14–16)
**Time:** About 4 hours
---
## 1. Objective
Take a logo from rough sketches to a finished, professional vector logo with proper variations and presentation — the exact workflow a client pays for.
## 2. Design Brief (fictional client)
**Client:** "Petal & Post" — a small flower delivery shop that delivers fresh bouquets in the city.
**Situation:** The owner wants a logo that feels fresh, friendly, and a little elegant. It must work on a shop sign, a delivery van, and a small sticker on the bouquet wrap.
**Your job:** Design the logo. Start on paper, vectorize the winner in CorelDRAW, and present it like a professional.
## 3. Specifications
- **Logo type:** Combination mark (icon + wordmark) — icon must be original vector art you draw yourself.
- **Construction:** 100% vector (no raster images inside the logo). Clean nodes only.
- **Color mode:** Build in CMYK (logo must survive print), but present RGB versions too.
- **Variations required:** (1) full color on white, (2) full color on dark, (3) single-color black, (4) single-color white (reversed).
## 4. Step-by-Step Requirements
1. **Sketch 12 concepts on paper.** Fast thumbnails, not finished art. Photograph the sheet.
2. **Pick your best 3.** Mark them and write one line each on why they could work.
3. **Vectorize the winner in CorelDRAW.** Redraw it cleanly with the Bezier/Shape tools. Refine until every curve is smooth.
4. **Optimize nodes.** Enter node-edit mode and remove every unnecessary node without changing the shape.
5. **Set the wordmark.** Choose a suitable font for "Petal & Post" (free for commercial use). Convert the final text to curves (Arrange → Convert to Curves) so the logo has no font dependency.
6. **Build the 4 variations.** Full color on white, full color on dark, black only, white only (reversed).
7. **Draw the clear-space diagram.** Show the logo with the minimum empty space around it, measured in a unit from the logo itself (e.g., the height of the letter "P").
8. **Assemble the presentation sheet.** A4 landscape: the 4 variations, the clear-space diagram, your 3 best sketches (small), and 2–3 lines on the idea behind the logo.
## 5. Deliverables
1. `GDM-M05-YourName-Logo-v1.cdr` — source file (logo built, text converted to curves).
2. `GDM-M05-YourName-Logo-v1.pdf` — the A4 presentation sheet.
## 6. Submission Instructions
- Name files exactly as above. The PDF must contain all 4 variations + clear space + sketches + idea note.
- Submit before the deadline. Late work loses 10 points per day.
## 7. Evaluation Rubric (Total: 100)
| Criteria | Points | What earns full marks |
|---|---|---|
| Concept quality (sketches) | 15 | 12 real thumbnails; best 3 marked with sensible reasons |
| Vector construction | 25 | Smooth original icon; clean nodes; no raster elements; text converted to curves |
| Logo idea & suitability | 15 | Fresh/friendly/elegant feeling; works at small sticker size (test: shrink it) |
| 4 variations | 15 | All four present and correct; reversed version truly readable on dark |
| Clear-space diagram | 10 | Correct unit shown; space marked on all four sides |
| Presentation sheet | 10 | Professional layout, correct spelling, sketches and idea note included |
| File correctness | 10 | CMYK build; curves converted; clean organized file |
## 8. Common Errors
- Tracing a flower photo or copying a logo seen online — the icon must be your own drawing.
- Leaving the wordmark as live text (font missing = broken logo). Always convert to curves.
- Dozens of unnecessary nodes making curves lumpy.
- "Reversed" version that is just the color logo placed on dark (must be single-color white).
- Clear-space diagram with random spacing and no measuring unit.
- Logo that becomes unreadable at sticker size (test by shrinking to 2 cm wide).
## 9. Instructor Marking Guide
- Open the CDR, select the icon, enter node-edit mode: count unnecessary nodes. Lumpy curves = deduct from construction.
- Select the wordmark: it must show as curves, not editable text. If still live text, deduct 8 points from file correctness.
- Check for raster content: open the Object Manager/links docker — any embedded bitmap inside the logo = major deduction (up to −15).
- Shrink test: view the logo at 2 cm wide. If the icon details vanish or the wordmark blurs into a blob, deduct from suitability.
- Originality spot-check: if the icon looks like a known brand's mark, ask the student to explain their sketch process; copied work scores zero for the assignment.
