# Module Assignment M02 — Design Fundamentals Audit
## ARTTECHES Graphic Designing Mastery | Instructor: Ali Akbar Shah
**Weight:** Counts toward Module Assignments (25% of final grade)
**Module:** M02 — Design Fundamentals (Days 01–04)
**Time:** About 3 hours
---
## 1. Objective
Prove that you can look at any design and explain *what type it is*, *what it is made of* (elements and principles), and *how to fix it* (composition and hierarchy). This is the thinking skill every professional designer uses before opening any software.
## 2. Design Brief (fictional client)
**Client:** GreenLeaf Grocery Store — a small neighborhood grocery shop.
**Situation:** GreenLeaf printed a flyer last month. Almost nobody came to the sale. The owner believes the flyer "looked fine" but cannot explain why it failed.
**Your job:** You are the designer. Audit the flyer like a professional: identify its design type, list which elements and principles it uses or breaks, judge its composition and hierarchy, then sketch a corrected redesign.
## 3. Specifications
- **Document size:** A4 portrait (210 × 297 mm), for screen viewing (RGB).
- **Pages:** 3–5 pages.
- **Language:** Simple English, your own words.
- **Tools:** Paper sketches (photographed or scanned) + a clean PDF. You may also build it in CorelDRAW if you are comfortable, but it is not required for this module.
## 4. Step-by-Step Requirements
1. **Find or recreate the "bad flyer."** Use a real flyer you have seen (take a photo) or quickly recreate a typical cluttered sale flyer yourself. Paste it on page 1.
2. **Page 2 — Design type and format analysis.** State the design type (flyer/poster), whether its images are raster or vector, and which file format the print shop should have received (PDF) and why.
3. **Page 3 — Elements & principles audit.** Go through at least 6 items (line, shape, color, texture, balance, contrast, alignment, proximity, repetition, white space). For each: name it, say whether the flyer uses it well or breaks it, and give one concrete example from the flyer.
4. **Page 4 — Composition & hierarchy fix.** Draw a grid over the flyer (on paper is fine). Mark what the eye sees first, second, third. Then sketch your redesigned layout with a clear headline → offer → details → call-to-action order.
5. **Page 5 — Summary.** In 5–8 lines, explain in simple words why the old flyer failed and why your version will work better.
## 5. Deliverables
1. `GDM-M02-YourName-Audit.pdf` — the 3–5 page audit document.
2. Photos/scans of your hand sketches must appear inside the PDF (clear and readable).
## 6. Submission Instructions
- Save as `GDM-M02-YourName-Audit.pdf` (replace YourName with your name, no spaces).
- Submit before the deadline through the method announced by the instructor.
- Late submission loses 10 points per day.
## 7. Evaluation Rubric (Total: 100)
| Criteria | Points | What earns full marks |
|---|---|---|
| Design type & format analysis | 15 | Correct type named; raster vs vector identified correctly; correct format recommended with a reason |
| Elements & principles audit (6 items) | 30 | Each item named, judged correctly with a concrete example from the flyer |
| Composition & grid analysis | 20 | Grid drawn; reading order (1st/2nd/3rd) marked and explained |
| Redesign sketch | 20 | Clear headline → offer → details → CTA order; visibly cleaner than the original |
| Clarity of writing & presentation | 15 | Simple English, own words, neat layout, readable sketches |
## 8. Common Errors
- Listing principles without pointing at the actual flyer ("the flyer lacks balance" — where? show it).
- Copying definitions from the internet instead of writing your own analysis.
- Redesign sketch that is just as cluttered as the original.
- Blurry, unreadable photos of sketches.
- Forgetting to name raster vs vector for the flyer's images.
## 9. Instructor Marking Guide
- Skim page 1–2 first: if the format recommendation is wrong (e.g., "send a JPG to the printer"), cap the format section at 5/15.
- For the audit table, accept any 6 valid elements/principles; check that each judgment matches the visible evidence. Vague rows ("color is bad") earn half marks; specific rows ("the red headline and green background vibrate and hurt readability") earn full marks.
- The redesign does not need to be beautiful — it needs to show a clear hierarchy. Reward a simple, correct layout over a fancy, confusing one.
- Deduct up to 10 points for copied text (spot-check one suspicious sentence with a web search).
- Passing this assignment requires at least 60/100.
